FOLLOWING the closure of the relevant Government transport fund back in 2010, Newcastle City Council are again currently undertaking a consultation exercise for transport improvements along the Great North Road between Blue House and the Broadway roundabouts (also including Haddricks Mill roundabout), but this time focused on accessing the Governments' Cycle Improvement Fund.

The current scheme therefore is the previous proposals, with some additions, plus the introduction of mainly on-road, but also some off-road cycle paths. Cycling infrastructure in the city needs to improve, be more accessible and safe for all ages, though it can be said that in the case of elements of the current proposals, the most sustainable, safe and widely used form of moving around, ie walking, appears to have been forgotten about in this mad dash for the (available) cash.

For instance, the proposals for the Broadway roundabout include for a cyclist free for all over all surrounding footways so they can avoid any red lights. …
