USQ has long been an important part of my life. Itas very difficult to take an objective view of the place, so I usually try not to get involved.

In fact the main source of my information these days is probably the Chronicle. The paperas coverage of Orientation Week and the arrival of new students has been excellent, both for the uni as a place that takes its teaching responsibilities very seriously and for the students themselves. Their wellbeing, personal safety and new work environment are just as important as the academic content of their degree programs.

Despite my previous involvement I have to admit having only the vaguest idea what a safety manager does.

I donat know whether he can do it better standing up, sitting down or lying flat on his back. I donat know whether he has to hop about the place, stride purposefully from one hot spot to another or simply rely on his asit stand deska to get him through the day.

Certainly, if we are to believe the pictures in last Fridayas paper, heas not short of technology. Heas bristling with flat screens and Bluetooth devices to give him voice control over any computers that might be out of his considerable reach.

He must be an awesome sight towering over any visitors. I imagine him as a danger to shipping on those foggy Toowoomba mornings when the mist swirls around his office and sparks fly from his laptop.

Itas good to know his back pain is less and some repetitive strain injuries have been eliminated. This should allow him to get through his allotted seven and a half hours relatively pain-free and alert to the needs of his sedentary colleagues.

Mind you, standing up in one of those (larger) meetings, when all around him are seated, seems a bit too evangelical for my taste.
