You face a fine if: you are the driver of a car with unrestrained children in it; you are over 16 and not wearing a seatbelt while in a car

141 seatbelt notices issued on the Coast since January 1

IF YOU are the rear passenger in a serious car crash and you are not wearing a seatbelt, you are five times more likely to kill the driver.

This message, along with a list of graphic statistics, will be used to improve motorist and passenger compliance with seat belt laws during a state-wide traffic operation, which started on Monday.

Operation Seat Belt was announced by the Queensland Police Service and State Traffic Support Branch in the lead up to holidays.

Statistics to be used during the campaign have shown there was a 20% increase of drivers and passengers not wearing a seat belt would be killed if involved in a serious crash last year, with 150 people killed a year Australia-wide. …
