Why Rafa's Exit Would Be Bad News for Spurs

BY THE time you read this, Rafa Benitez could be on the way out of town and, while I don't wish to appear cynical, that could only be bad news for Tottenham and Arsenal as they chase third place in the Premier League or at least strive not to finish fifth.

Indeed, whatever is to happen at Chelsea now, there should be no encouragement taken in north London from Benitez's refreshing burst of candour at Middlesbrough last night following the Cup tie.

The air at Stamford Bridge needed clearing and Chelsea's slump towards fifth should halt as a consequence.

So the north London derby at White Hart Lane on Sunday becomes bigger than ever. And more exciting from Spurs' point of view because a win would consolidate them as favourites for automatic qualification for the Champions League with plausible hope of retaining Gareth Bale's heart, mind and contract of employment.

I disagree with those who assume that Bale is bound for either Real Madrid or Barcelona. …
