NEW ORLEANS | Before most Jaguars fans knew who Gus Bradley was, the name du jour was another coordinator from the NFC West - San Francisco's Greg Roman.

Because of his tie to new general manager Dave Caldwell - college roommate, long-time friend, etc., and his body of work in two seasons leading the 49ers offense - Roman was seen as a top candidate to replace Mike Mularkey.

But the 49ers' success combined with Bradley's impressive interview threw a curveball into the Jaguars' search - Bradley was hired as coach on Jan. 18.

While delivering high praise about Caldwell, Roman was fidgety Wednesday morning at the 49ers' hotel when the topic was the Jaguars' once-open coaching position.

Asked if he could understand why Caldwell couldn't wait an extra three weeks to hire him, Roman said: "I'm not, you know, yeah, I don't know anything about that."

But of course he does.

"I was getting ready for the Atlanta game and trust me when I tell you that took up every minute of every day," Roman said. "I wasn't really paying attention to any of that. I was just trying to do a great job at my job. How Dave came to his decision, I'm sure he has good reasons."

After Bradley's introductory press conference Jan. 18, Caldwell admitted he would have "probably" reached out to Roman had the 49ers lost to Green Bay on Jan. 12.

But Caldwell did surprise some observers by not waiting until after the NFC championship game and San Francisco's game against Atlanta. But perhaps Caldwell had a premonition - the 49ers won to advance to the Super Bowl against Baltimore.

"To our benefit, we kept winning and he's here," 49ers running backs coach Tom Rathman said. "The timing and everything was a setback because if we weren't in it, he would have had a really, really good chance at getting a head coaching job."

Caldwell did reach out to Roman recently - to congratulate him on the 49ers' win over Atlanta. …
