THE new Dacia Sandero has a lot to commend it - but it's the price which is the real headline grabber.

The spacious five-door family hatchback, right, which has just gone on sale, is the cheapest car you can buy in Britain - with a price tag of just PS5,995.

And while it might not be a brand that you have heard of in the past it's a marque which belongs to, and has all the backing of, French car giant Renault.

For the entry-level price you get a good looking 48 miles per gallon, 1.2-litre, five seater car with features like tinted windows, electronic stability control and traction control, front and side airbags and daylight running lights.

It does lack some of the modern conveniences we have all become used to like electric windows and electrically adjustable door mirrors but a brand new car with a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty for under PS6,000 is good value in anyone's books.

And if you are worried about the possibility of longer term problems you can extend the warranty to five years/60,000 miles for an extra PS395, or even seven-years/100,00 miles for an additional PS850.

Obviously with a budget priced car you don't get all the bells and whistles. Come to think about it you don't even get rear head restraints or a radio - I can't remember the last time I had a car without a radio - but you can add both for a realistic price. If you fancy a few more frills you can upgrade from the base level Access model to the Ambiance for just PS600 and then you will have your radio/CD player and rear headrests, along with electric front windows, remote central locking, body-coloured bumpers and even a vanity mirror in the passenger's sunvisor.

If you want to really push the boat out you could go for the top-of-the range Laureate spec which will give you features like air conditioning, electric windows all-round, cruise control and an on-board computer. The Laureate will set you back an additional PS2,000 over the price of the base model but even at that you are only facing a bill of PS7,995, or the price of a decent low spec second hand car. …
