METRO owner Nexus will take on 30 new apprentices as its modernisation programme continues.

Nexus is teaming up with Gateshead College for its advanced engineering apprenticeship scheme, which will start in September.

The Metro is undergoing a PS385m revamp and Nexus is also looking to update its workforce.

Recruitment is under way for the three-year programme, with an uptake of 10 each year planned. The learners will be offered careers working as part of the maintenance and technical teams.

The programme will cover all aspects of rail engineering including electrical and mechanical, signalling and communications training. Individuals on the apprenticeship programme will spend their first year on block release and achieve an NVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations and BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.

They will also gain English, maths and IT skills at Level 2. In their second and third years, they will continue studies at college and work towards an NVQ Level 3 in Railway Engineering. …
