GYMPIEaS Catholic parish priest, Father Pat Cassidy, hopes the newly elected Pope will represent a new era in the Church with more of a focus on the poor.

Thought of as a ahumble mana, Argentinean cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the first Pope from the Americas in the history of the Church, taking the papal name of Francis.

Having lived through eight papal changeovers, Fr Pat welcomed the decision to appoint a non-European to the papacy.

aIave heard heas got a very strong affiliation with the poor,a he said.

aHis way of living has been very humble. He did all his own housekeeping and cooking, which is quite rare for a cardinal.a

Francis is the first non-European Pope in more than 1200 years, a choice that reflects the shifting demographics of the Roman Catholic faith.
