Looking for a Greener Future; Environmentalist Returns to Familiar Role

NARELLE McCarthy is a firm believer in the old adage that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

The environmentalist and former Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) campaigns manager has returned to the organisation as spokeswoman after almost 12 months away.

Ms McCarthy left her previous role to take up a position as communications and campaigns officer for Queenslandas first Greens senator, Larissa Waters.

The position allowed her to focus on amonumentala national environment campaigns, from the protection of World Heritage-listed areas to the impacts of the expansion of coal seam gas operations across farmlands, the Great Barrier Reef and the mining of protected areas.

It was an invaluable experience, but meant a move to Brisbane and a lot of time in Canberra.

aThe opportunity came up to come back to SCEC and it was a professional as well as a personal decision,a Ms McCarthy said.

aI feel Iam more equipped now and my passion has never waned for the region. …
