THEYaRE the pits a the tyre-popping, backside-bruising, crash-causing potholes that have been bursting through Sunshine Coast roads since January.

And they are costing ratepayers more than $35,000 a week to fix.

Relentless rain and floods have been blamed for the crumbling roads, with patching crews having to fill in more than 2500 holes a week.

The pricey repair bill was expected to absorb much of Sunshine Coast Councilas estimated $4 million budget to repair the storm-damaged region.

Thatas on top of the $212 million from the State Government which has been committed to the recovery and reconstruction projects across the North Coast.

A council spokeswoman said damage to the Coastas 3500km road network was significant.

aOur patching crews are repairing roughly one pothole per week per kilometre,a she said.

aWe are still assessing the implications of storm damage to foreshores, vegetation and debris clearing, pavements and drainage wash-outs. …
