Tour Notebook; Disapproval Likely in Formal Reply to Anchoring Ban

Ponte Vedra Beach resident Jim Furyk, a member of the PGA Tour Policy Board, told Ryan Lavner of The Golf Channel that the Tour's formal reply to the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club regarding the planned ban on anchoring while putting could come within days.

Judging from Furyk's cryptic comments and other reports about separate conference calls Tour commissioner Tim Finchem had with the Policy Board and the Players Advisory Council on Monday, the Tour may register its disapproval over the anchoring ban, which is planned for Jan. 1, 2016. The USGA gave other governing bodies in golf a 90-day window to accept comments, which is up Feb. 28.

"The USGA asked for the different bodies of golf to give their opinion," Furyk told Lavner at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain, the site of this week's World Golf Championship Accenture Match Play. "Right now, we're in the process of just giving our opinion on what we think is the best for the game of golf."

Earlier reports on Finchem's teleconference with the PAC indicated overwhelming opposition to the anchoring ban. According to a previous Golf Channel report, around a dozen of the 16 PAC members were on the call and one player told The Golf Channel "everybody is against it."

Furyk admitted as much.

"It wasn't like an eight-to-eight split," he said. "It was very lopsided one way. It kind of gave us an idea of where we thought we might want to go and what we might want to write in our letter [to the USGA]."


Rory McIlroy has played one golf tournament in 2013, missing the cut at the European PGA Tour's Abu Dhabi Championship.

That poor performance was met with almost immediate second-guessing from the media about McIlroy's switch to Nike in the off-season. The move came complete with a laser-light show announcement and a TV commercial with Tiger Woods. …
