LITERARY SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS

The Christa Powell Walley Scholarship is available to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate college students who have ties to Nassau County. Named for the late Christa Powell Walley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Powell of Fernandina Beach, the $2,000 scholarship is dedicated to encouraging writers in their pursuit of a literary career. The application is available at www.ameliaislandbookfestival.com and should be mailed to the Amelia Island Book Festival, P.O. Box 15286, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035. SUPERINTENDENT SEEKS LOBBYIST

Clay County schools Superintendent Charlie Van Zant Jr. wants the School Board to hire a lobbyist to try and persuade state lawmakers to funnel funds to the school district to bolster its programs, especially the career and technical academies. Van Zant said he has some possible lobbyists in mind. He recently told the board that he'd like it to consider holding a special meeting soon to hire one. The legislative sessions opens Tuesday. Van Zant said for "a relatively small amount of money," the district could reap significant benefits. Initially, the lobbyist would be employed four months, and the board would have the option of renewing his/her contract on July 1.

POSITIONS OPEN ON 2 CITY BOARDS

The City Commission is accepting applications for one slot on the St. Augustine Firefighters Retirement Pension Board of Trustees and two slots on the Historic Architectural Review Board.
