MICKY Ward concedes Blaydon's promotion hopes are done and dusted following last weekend's defeat at National One leaders Ealing but remains delighted by his side's progress.

The director of rugby and his team fell by just a point in atrocious conditions in West London, with questionable refereeing and a dodgy pitch thrown in for good measure.

The former Newcastle Falcons prop said: "We could have had the game called off had we wanted to, but we had travelled all the way down there so we just wanted to get it played.

"We were beaten 12-11 in the end, but I was proud of the lads' efforts and we could easily have won it.

"We chose to kick a penalty at the end and missed when we could maybe have gone for the line-out, but it was a very good performance and we had our chances."

The result leaves Blaydon still in with a mathematical chance of promotion at 17 points behind with 25 still to play for, but Ward admitted: "The title is Ealing's now. …
