THE Lower Clarence Magpies are heading into this season with one goal a to become a competitive team.

After winning the grand final in 2009, the Magpies have failed to attract players to the club as it has tried to recover from their financial woes.

Its poor run off the field has been replicated on it, as the Maclean-based club has won only a handful of games since.

This season sees Ricky Binge and Tony Marshall take up the reins in an attempt to steer the club in the right direction.

Binge said the first step to success was getting everything with the committee sorted out, which they had done.

aWe have based it on getting debt-free and for the first time in years we are starting the season in the black,a Binge said.

aThe club hasnat been able to attract any higher-profile players because weave always been in the situation.

aThis year we have a lot of local players stepping up to the challenge and I think they will go well. …
