SPEEDWAY: He set records in the United States, and now Shane Stewart is already making his mark Down Under by adding another milestone to his long list of career achievements.

The crowd of 2300 that poured into Maryborough Speedway last Friday night to see the two-time American sprint car champion was treated to a feverish display of high-octane thrills on a record-breaking night.

Stewart ensured his first drive at the Tinana track would be memorable, setting a new lap record during qualifying on opening night of the Tri-City Shootout.

His explosive lap of 11.079 smashed Pete Thorleyas mark of 11.110 in 2007.

aIt was like the car was on rails. It just flew around that track,a Maryborough Sporting Car Club vice-president Ben Lesmond said.

aOur track curator (Gay Murdoch) has been trying three or four years to have that record broken.

aIt wouldave been nice for an Aussie to break it, but to get someone as high profile as Shane, the club is ecstatic. …
