1. CHOOSE YOUR STYLE There are a lot of good photographers out there, it's just a matter of finding the right one for you. Do your research and find what style of photography you like. For instance, do you prefer a traditional, modern or journalistic approach? Look at as many photographers' websites as you can and use them to study styles and abilities. Use wedding blogs and websites to gain inspiration for the kind of photographs you would like on your big day.

2. MEET FACE-TO-FACE No matter how talented they are, it's good to have a chat and get to know the person who is going to be with you during the most amazing day of your life. It's important to feel comfortable and relaxed with them if you are going to get the best results. They need to fit in with your closest friends and family on the day. To be an excellent photographer it not only takes technical skill but personal skill.

3. DON'T SCRIMP Remember that when it comes to certain aspects of your day, like your photographer, you really do get what you pay for. Your wedding photographs are the one thing that you can look back on to relive your wonderful day, and there is only one chance of getting it right. Good photographers use quality equipment and take spare cameras and lenses to every wedding, which is very costly. Find the right package for you and if you are working with a tight budget, cut back on something else if you can.

4. CHOOSE THE PROFESSIONALS Yes, uncle John has a fabulous new SLR camera, but will he capture all of those special memories? Will he know how to create groups and be able to pose you as a couple without you looking awkward? If it rains, will he be able to photograph the wedding party indoors with low light? There are so many reasons why I advise choosing a professional.
