Lonsdale Makes Mark with Win for New Club

MARKHIM LONSDALE made a winning debut for his new club at Elswick Harriers' Good Friday Road Races at Newburn.

The former inter-counties cross-country champion changed from Gateshead to Crook but the result was the same - a top-class display.

Competing in the under-15 boys' race over a new 1.6-mile course, Lonsdale was never headed as he came home 18 seconds clear of Wallsend's Adam Hill.

The runner-up was easing back into competition after being out injured for most of the winter.

Tynedale's Max Pearson celebrated his 15th birthday by finishing in third - though he could have lined up in the under-13 race.

Kieran Hedley (Morpeth), who finished second last year, won the under-13 race this time round over the same 1.6-mile distance.

The teenager finished 10 seconds clear of Chester-le-Street's Ryan Arthur with new Elswick recruit Ben Wilson a close-up third.

In the under-15 girls' race, Gateshead''s Philippa Chambers produced the day's biggest winning margin. …
