COUNCILLOR George Seymouras push to open up the Fraser Coast Regional Councilas data banks is a big step in the right direction.

The ideal that ainformation belongs to the publica is one that I have fought for as a journalist.

Newspapers hold a position of privilege, but for the most part, we donat have top-secret access to more or different information than any other citizen.

Journalists just have the knowledge and the experience of how to uncover the data they need a or who to ask to find out.

Anyone who has tried to use the Australian Bureau of Statistics, or who has had to put in a Right To Information request will understand that getting the information required is not always as easy as it seems.

But the ideal is one that every local council needs to embrace.

The information Cr Seymour proposes to share is about the councilas ratepayers, and it belongs to their ratepayers.
