NEWCASTLE youngster Bayley Cartmell has moved a step closer to fulfilling a smashing sporting dream.

The 12-year-old has made it through to Saturday's final stages of the selection process to become a ball boy for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2, London, in November.

Cartmell, a pupil at Newcastle School for Boys, was among nearly 50 children who took part in the Barclays Ball Kids Regional Selection Trials at Sunderland's Wearside Health and Racquets Club.

He showed impressive athleticism, agility, endurance, co-ordination, ball skills, balance, speed and team work.

That led to the talent ID team selecting him as one of just two regional youngsters to go through to the nations al trial.

At that trial, the final squad of 30 Barclays Ball Kids will be selected for the prestigious Finals, which will feature top names like Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal.

Cartmell said: "I would love to be a Barclays Ball Kid because I enjoy playing tennis and it would be good to see what it is like as a ball boy and see what the professionals do on court. …
