TPC Sawgrass general manager Bill Hughes was named the 2012 club professional of the year by the Northern Chapter PGA during its awards luncheon last week at the San Jose Country Club.

"It was a very humbling moment," Hughes said of receiving the chapter's highest annual award.

In other awards:

- Jim Loubauer of Deerwood received the chapter teacher of the year award and Pamela Shelley of the Sawgrass Country Club was named the assistant pro of the year.

- Mike Lynch received the Bill Strasbaugh Award for mentoring fellow PGA professionals in employment and community service opportunities.

- Hidden Hills owner Russ Libby received the Horton Smith Award for his contributions to professional education within the chapter.

- Boots Farley of the North Florida Junior Foundation received the Junior Golf Leader Award; Jack Aschenbach of Amelia National received the Patriot Award for spearheading the chapter's military-related activities and charities; and Sawgrass general manager Greg Lecker received the President's Plaque for contributions in the area of player development.

- Gary Vanover of Footjoy was the sales representative of the year and Todd Bork of San Jose (private), Bruce Mohler of the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club (resort) and Willy DiStefano of South Hampton (public) were named the merchandisers of the year.

- Action News sportscaster Brent Martineau was named the amateur of the year for his involvement in community and chapter golf activities.

FREEDOM FRIDAY GROWING

The Northern Chapter PGA's "Freedom Fridays" has now expanded to chapters and sections in 15 states as the initiative to build awareness for military-related charities is on pace to become a national program.

So has the color scheme.

Last year, staff and players of First Coast courses were urged to wear red shirts on Fridays to symbolize the efforts. …
