Flood-Affected St John,COs Celebrates Its Recovery; ST JOHN,COS Lutheran Primary School

Article excerpt

ST JOHNCOS Lutheran Primary School has always paid tribute to, and valued, the community environment that exists between the staff, students, families and local congregation.

Principal Janelle Turner said this spirit came to the fore when the end of January 2013 saw the lower classroom block, two grassed oval areas, playground and court of St JohnCOs Lutheran Primary School was inundated with floodwater.

C[pounds sterling]Due to the hard work of our many volunteers and by moving the two Prep classes into the hall and the Year 1 class into the library, the school was able to begin operation only a week later than planned on February 4,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]Sadly, the school did not have a space in which to accommodate the St JohnCOs Lutheran Kindergarten which had to cease operation until classroom renovations were completed.C[yen]

With the builder, Darren Rudling of Rudling Builders, officially handing the keys back to signify it was no longer a building site, the kindergarten opened again for its first day of operation on April 15.

C[pounds sterling]Yesterday, members of the school community and others who had assisted us in any way were invited to join us from 3.30pm with activities, including a jumping castle, face painting, outdoor lanes from Bundy Bowls and, most important in the studentsCO eyes, use of the playground, sandpit and soccer oval again,C[yen] Mrs Turner said.

Today, the celebration continues with the Prep and Year 1 students beginning Term 2 in their designated classrooms and the rest of the school having full use of the hall, library and all grassed playing areas.

The court still remains closed until repairs are carried out.

While St JohnCOs is a single-stream school, two Prep classes were introduced for 2013 to prepare for the move for Year 7 students in 2015.

Vacancies still exist in both these Prep classes. …
