THE urgent need to slash Sunshine Coast Council staff was a consequence of elected representatives allowing themselves to be asnoweda into increasing a rather than reducing a the workforce since de-amalgamation, a key residentsa group has claimed.

A critical report into the organisation, which is due to be tabled soon, is expected to announce a major overhaul, including transfer of some functions to private enterprise, the cutting of some departments and amalgamation of others.

Residents Association South Sunshine Coast spokesman Peter Bryant (pictured) said the council had made no conscious effort to reduce staff since amalgamation.

aTotal staff numbers, excluding those transferred to UnityWater, is now greater than at amalgamation,aa he said.

aThe responsibility for that lies solely with the CEO and elected officials for allowing themselves to be snowed.

aAt last they are going to do something about it but it should have come earlier.aa

Mr Bryant said the residentsa association had been anti-amalgamation but overstaffing was a consequence of lack of management rather than the merger. …
