THE University of the Sunshine Coastas Headstart program has opened the door to university life for Gympie district Year 12 student Sophie Goulis, who loves every minute of it.

The Widgee resident now attends classes at USC Gympie (at the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE campus) after enrolling in the Headstart program last year to prepare herself for a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree.

Headstart is an award-winning program that allows young people to study two university subjects while still at school, with their efforts earning credit towards a USC degree.

Sophie, 17, said she was thrilled to be able to study university-level subjects while being home-schooled for Year 12 through Groves Christian College.

She achieved a High Distinction in her first subject, communication and thought, last year and is well on her way to another in health, culture and society.

aI have absolutely loved the whole process, especially getting a taste for some of the subjects I will get to study as part of my degree,a she said. …
