THE Fraser Coast is in the grip of a diabetes epidemic andthe number of residents diagnosed in the past five years has almost doubled.

Information from the National Diabetes Services Scheme shows 6400 residents a 7.3% of the local population a are now registered as having either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as compared to 3500 in 2007.

The state average is 5% and the national average is 5.4%

Dietitian Duncan Hunter said 88% of the Fraser Coastas registered diabetics suffered from type 2 which, unlike type 1, could be largely prevented through regular exercise, a nutritious diet and maintaining a healthy weight.

He said scientific studies had linked increased sugar consumption with an increased rate of diabetes.
