Harlem Shake E Adds Up to Fun Times at Thhe College

Article excerpt

CHOOSING a college and walking through the doors on your first day can be a daunting experience. When the college boasts a 100% pass rate at A-level, growing student numbers, and plans for further expansion you can be assured of academic opportunities. But what many don't realise is that students at Middlesbrough College also benefit from a culture of equality and diversity, mixed with a real sense of fun.

In recent weeks staff and students gyrated and shimmied to a Harlem Shake; volunteered to be put in the stocks to have wet sponges thrown at them; spent the night outdoors in sleeping bags as part of Big Tees Sleepout; and principal and chief executive Mike Hopkins painted his feet blue and green to help promote Fairtrade. Mike is the kind of principal who believes in leading by example and he is regularly found on the 'shop floor' leading whatever fun activity is taking place.

Anyone who spends any amount of time at Middlesbrough College will soon discover that fun, friendship and really being 'in it together' is at the heart of college life.

It's something that Mike prides himself on. And the ethos has not gone unnoticed by national education journalists. Nick Linford, editor at FE Week, recently tweeted that 'more FE principals should be like Mike Hopkins'.

Praise indeed! Mike and the team at MCollege are constantly linnovative fun ways to experiences to students aimed at broadening thhelping them get ahead Mike said: "It's essentiastudents feel part of the Middlesbrough College golden team!
