MIDDLESBROUGH'S best young amateur boxers have been making headway in the Junior ABA Championships.

Wellington's NABC featherweight runner-up James Thompson began his championship challenge with a repeat points victory over Birtley's Jon Ruddick at Rainton Meadows Arena.

Defensively tight Thompson now has a Tyne Tees and Wear final next weekend against less experienced but strong Steven Raybould from the Natural Progression gym in Stockton.

Natural Progression's Adam Mackintosh and Arman Asad have received byes to the quarter-finals, as has Pallister Park light heavyweight Jahmal Weaver.

Phil Thomas School of Boxing's Jamie Donoghue and Kasey Robinson, and Redcar ABC light welterweight Tom Hill, are all still trying to get through the Tyne Tees and Wear stage after none of them boxed on the opening afternoon.

Phil Thomas lightweight Mo Mehrban went out of the competition on his shield as he lost a barnburner to Forest Hall's much more seasoned Terrence Wilkinson. …
