SOUTH GRAFTON Rebels continued their tough initiation to the NRRRL with a 32-20 loss to Kyogle.

The match marked the return of Rhys Walters to the football field after his well-documented off-field contract saga.

Walters was nominated by coach Grant Stevens as one of the Rebelsa best in a game injury reared its head again.

aIt was good to see Rhys out there a he was brilliant,a Stevens said.

aJosh Harris was great in the second row as well.a

Injury struck again in the first half, with fullback Cain Freeburn suffering a suspected broken arm.

Kyle Davey filled in for Freeburn at the back, but the loss of a player around the 30-minute mark in two out of two games for the Rebels would have people believing theyave been struck by a curse.

It ended a bittersweet match for Freeburn, who became the first try scorer for the reborn Rebels before leaving the match.

Injury aside it was a sloppy affair for the Rebels, who went into the break trailing 16-6.

aWe only had 12 fresh players in the first half as some people couldnat make the trip,a Stevens said.

aIt ended up being a bit of a shemozzle but we performed better in the second half.a

The loss wasnat all bad news for the Rebels, with Stevens taking aplenty of positivesa from the defeat.

aWe took a while to get into it but once we did I think we played pretty well,a Stevens said.

aWe made it a lot harder than we shouldave but Iam happy with how we are going.a

The Rebels will host Evans Head Bombers next week.

Meanwhile, Ballina Seagulls centre Luke Simpson scored two tries to help lead the Seagulls to a 42-20 win against Northern United in the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League clash at Kingsford Smith Park, Ballina.

His attacking flair was overshadowed yesterday by some brilliant individual defence.

Every time he made a tackle the opposition felt it and one of his defensive efforts was rewarded with a try from a spilled ball. …
