ANZAC DAY SPECIAL

VISITORS and locals alike wishing to pay their respects to those men and women who have served Australia during war time are invited to the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum, open 10am until 5pm today, ANZAC Day, with the tribute exhibition, Lest We Forget.

The exhibition of photographs and memorabilia includes portrait photographs from the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) collection.

The World War I Roll of Honour for the Town of Gladstone and Shire of Calliope is a permanent fixture at the gallery/museum and many of the names featured are recognisable as local street names, today.

Gallery/museum staff and volunteers have been working on a Gladstone Region War Memorial booklet, detailing more than 20 memorials across the region, including their locations and inscriptions.

For example information about the Bororen War Memorial and Park, on Dougall St, Bororen commemorating World War I and World War II is included with the following details:

aFive vertical granite rocks with horizontal carved lines stand behind a large boulder with stainless steel plaque attached. These and additional boulders are within a circle of river stone.

aThis circle is within a larger circle of crushed granite. Ten hoop pines form the outer circle.aa

The booklet has been collated from information and images compiled for the Queensland War Memorial Register, Queensland Department of Public Works, Queensland Government, whilst contributing to the updating of the Queensland War Memorial Register, online at www.qldwarmemorials.com.au

Development will continue and the current document is available during the exhibition, which continues until May 25.

Management and staff wish to advise the gallery/museum will close briefly during the Gladstone ANZAC Day March that commences from Gladstone Regional Council's Civic Centre, Goondoon St, Gladstone at 10.30am.
