BANGALOW Lions Billy Cart Derby organisers have decided to steer their quirky trophies in a different direction this year.

They have parted company with Fernleighas Douglas Young, of Young at Art, who for 18 years has provided whimsical ceramic trophies to the race winners.

This year, the 19th of the popular community event, organisers have turned to Newrybaras Tom Hogan, who will hand-craft unique timber awards. Mr Young said he was disappointed and saddened to be no longer associated with the event. But organiser Tony Heeson said they had decided it was time for a fresh approach.

Engineering company Baulderstone has been announced as the major sponsor. The company, which is building the $530 million Tintenbar to Ewingsdale upgrade, has a huge base just outside the town.

Project director Vince Newton said not only would they be financially backing the event, but his employees would also be serving as vol- unteers on the day, helping to set up safety barriers and keep spectators safe. …
