IPSWICHCOS number two menCOs hockey team opens its state campaign today against Brisbane (1) at 8am and Rockhampton (11.45am).

Those games are at the State Hockey Centre.

Team coach Paul Malcolm has a combination with plenty of youthful enthusiasm.

C[pounds sterling]WeCOve got a really strong side,C[yen] Malcolm said.

C[pounds sterling]The majority of my side are all around that under-18 age but they are the next crop of the future Ipswich first side.

C[pounds sterling]ICOm pretty happy with how they are going too.C[yen]

Malcolm said the return of Daniel Mantell last week was a huge boost.

C[pounds sterling]HeCOs arguably one of the best players in Ipswich. He adds a lot of depth and guidance to our side.C[yen]

Malcolm was pleased to have Dean Pavitt leading his side.

BEING promoted from last yearCOs state open championships has helped IpswichCOs number one menCOs hockey side gain a stronger starting position for this weekendCOs new format.

Eighth-ranked Ipswich is in pool C, along with third-ranked Mackay and 13th-placed Gladstone.

Two wins at Chermside today will propel Ipswich into the major pools tomorrow.

C[pounds sterling]ICOm really happy with the draw and hopefully we can win our first two games to really set us up for Saturday,C[yen] Ipswich coach Nathan Hooper said.

C[pounds sterling]Semi-finals are not out of the question.C[yen]

However, Hooper expects IpswichCOs second team to be just as competitive, if they can start well in Pool A against Brisbane and Rockhampton.

C[pounds sterling]All those young fellas are playing first-grade hockey in Ipswich every week,C[yen] Hooper said.

C[pounds sterling]I honestly think they have as much chance of qualifying as we have.C[yen]

Under the new tournament structure, 14 menCOs teams from around the state start in one of five pools with winners being ranked after the first day of competition.

Tier 1 and tier 2 games will be played tomorrow with finals on Sunday.

Matches are at the State Hockey Centre (Colmslie), Burringbar Park (Chermside) and Easts Hockey Club (Carina). …
