The market seems to be awash with sports utility vehicles, but the Trax, which will take on the Nissan Juke and Qashqai models, offers many of the benefits of a full-blooded SUV combined with the driving dynamics and economy of a smaller car.

There is a choice of two petrol engines - 1.4-litre turbo and 1.6-litre - plus one diesel engine - a 1.7-litre turbo.

Models with manual transmissions come with a stop/start function to help increase fuel efficiency and the 1.7 diesel model is also available with a six-speed automatic gearbox. And with on-demand all-wheel-drive as standard on many models, the Trax has plenty to offer those who don't want to be hindered by a cumbersome off-roading giant that guzzles fuel for fun.

There are two trim levels - LS and LT - and both are richly equipped. Elegantly-styled, the Trax looks great from any angle with a bold stance thanks to its pronounced wheel arches, muscular rear haunches, smooth sweeping lines, spoiler and the dual port grille with the iconic Chevrolet bowtie emblem.

The modern, driver-focused interior features many techno treats - most impressive of all being the MyLink communications system which is standard on upper trim levels.

It seems to be a fact these days that we are incapable of going anywhere and being separated from our mobile media devices for a second and MyLink allows occupants to access all the data on their smart devices such as phone numbers, music, photos etc.

It can even access a sat nav facility via a downloadable app called BRINGGO.

Storage options have been well thought out on the Trax and the boot can accommodate 1,370 litres of luggage with rear seats folded flat. There is an additional underfloor storage section plus compartments under the seats along with two glove-boxes, one of which has USB connectivity. We tried out a couple of models through demanding coastal and mountain roads in Croatia and the Trax didn't disappoint. First up was the 1.4 petrol model in top-of-the-range LT trim priced at PS19,795.
