Auction to Raise PS1m for Worthy Causes; Event in Honour of Toon Legend Sir Bobby Robson

AN auction in honour of Newcastle United legend Sir Bobby Robson is returning with the aim of raising PS1m for worthy causes.

The second Sir Bobby's Breakthrough Auction was launched yesterday at the PFA Awards Dinner in London in front of the great and good from the football world.

With an ambitious new target, organisers are aiming to raise PS1m from the online auction to benefit four charities with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation receiving half of all money raised.

The last auction in October 2011 saw prize lots being donated from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Josep 'Pep' Guardiola, Andre Villas Boas, Alan Pardew, Arsene Wenger, Lewis Hamilton, Gary Lineker, Graeme Swann, David Beckham, and Ant & Dec.

Lots involved in this year's auction are a closely guarded secret but staff from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Breakthrough Breast Cancer are calling for businesses to support the online auction held in memory of the legendary football player manager.

Mark Robson, Sir Bobby's son and part of the auction committee, said: "Sadly, cancer is likely to affect every one of us in one way or another and my family knows first hand the pain it can cause. That's why we are so committed to continuing the work started by my father in supporting research for new treatments.

"My family and I are very grateful to everyone who has already contributed a prize and we continue to be astounded by the generosity of the businesses and individuals who get involved."

The auction was founded by Gina Long, a friend of the late manager supported by Sir Bobby's widow Lady Elsie and the couple's three sons.

She said: "I was lucky enough to know Sir Bobby and Lady Elsie for over 35 years. Sir Bobby was loved the world over and I wanted to create something very special to honour him.

"The online auction is a fantastic platform that allows everybody to become involved in helping us raise crucial funds for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and two Suffolk hospitals. …
