Man Is Cleared by Jury of Rape Charge

A MAN accused of raping a woman has been cleared after jurors were told of sleep-related defence evidence.

Jamie Lee Cockram, 23, was found not guilty of raping a young woman, who cannot be named, after a trial at Teesside Crown Court.

Cockram, of Staintondale Avenue, Dormanstown, Redcar, denied the rape from June last year.

He seemed asleep and unaware of what he was doing when he behaved violently to the woman, the court heard.

He said she woke him up and she was tearful, frightened and shaken, saying he'd put his arm across her neck.

"I was confused and I didn't know what I'd done," he told the jury.

Shortly afterwards, he said, when she had calmed down, she persuaded him to have sex to help him sleep.

The prosecution alleged she did not consent but was "submitting or acquiescing" to him, frightened of what he'd do if she said no.

He said he believed she was genuinely consenting.

He said she never said she didn't want to have sex, resisted or gave any signals that she wasn't interested. …
