The variety of gluten-free food and drink available in shops and restaurants has increased considerably in the last few years, with supermarkets launching their own ranges and gluten-free options appearing on menus everywhere, from small cafes to top restaurants.

This is partially due to people who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease - an autoimmune disorder triggered non-sufferers who have chosen to follow a gluten-free diet.

Many big name brands now offer gluten-free products and have invested in making them as appealing as their products containing gluten.

One of these is NewburnBakehouse by Warburtons, whose dedicated gluten- and wheat-free bakery is based on our doorstep in Newburn, baking tasty products such as baguettes, wraps, teacakes and muffins.

We're fortunate to have lots of producers, shops and eateries in the great north that cater for gluten-free diets, without compromising on the great taste that our region's food and drink is known for. By the time you read this, we will have hosted the first Great North Gluten Free Fair, sponsored by NewburnBakehouse by Warburtons, in order to showcase this.

We know that many people are passionate about seeking new places to buy and eat glutenfree in our region, so we wanted to show that everyone can enjoy a variety of delicious great north food and drink, even if they follow a gluten-free diet.

Local businesses at the event included Blaydonbased Beckleberry's, which is known for its fresh cream ice cream, real fruit sorbets and patisserie products. Having created a gluten-free range around 12 months ago, the popular products are now sold in high-end restaurants and hotels, including a nationwide chain of coffee shops.

Sales director Peter Craig said: "We have recently revamped our gluten-free range and launched our Fine Dining desserts for coeliacs at the Gluten Free Fair. We're really proud of the selection, which includes our Marbled Chocolate Truffle and Lemon Meringue Tart, as it's different from anything else on the market.

"Our goal is to make gluten-free desserts that are difficult to distinguish from the gluten versions in terms of taste, and we're delighted that this has been the feedback from many of the hotels and restaurants we supply. …
