ACONTRACTOR based in Newcastle has been awarded a PS4.75m contract to deliver a new PS7.7m bus depot in Dunston, Gateshead.

Surgo Construction, based at Newcastle Business Park, has been in existence for more than 100 years.

The firm, which employs more than 100 people, has been working with developer UK Land Estates, to erect the steel framework for the depot being built for Go North East.

The new facility includes many sustainable design elements such as rainwater harvesting and recycling of water onsite and covers about 2.38 hectares.

Once complete it will create 4,150 sq m of workshops as well as storage, office, mess room and training facilities with external testing and bus fleet parking areas.

The depot will replace Go North East's existing sites at Winlaton and Sunderland Road, Gateshead.

Work is expected to be completed in the autumn.

Surgo has won a clutch of new contracts across the higher education, leisure and social housing sectors over the last year.

The first is a PS1.3m window replacement and refurbishment project at the Christopherson building, which forms part of Durham University's estate.

Surgo successfully undertook enabling works for this project last year and this new work sees the team working alongside GSS Architecture, services design engineers Desco, cost managers Turner & Townsend and the university's own project manager, Sean Kelly.

In North Tyneside, the firm has been appointed by the Duke of Northumberland's commercial property and development arm, Hotspur Land Limited, to build a restaurant shell and associated external works, including drainage and mains services connections at Backworth Business Park.

Andy Laurie Construction Consultancy, acting as quantity surveyor on behalf of Hotspur Land, was responsible for Surgo's appointment. …
