And the good news is you can have a five-star hallway for a two-star price - if you follow our simple style guide LONG AND LEAN Many hallways are longer than they are wide, so there''s a tendency to leave them bare. We picked a Malm bedroom console from Ikea (www.ikea.com) as it is long and lean. Its rectilinear form helps to visually elongate the space.

Bought from the store in white, we masked off a series of cuffs and panels and painted them black for a smooth colour block look. A lick of paint can really make something your own.

BUTTERFLIES FLUTTER BY Modern hotels look more like art galleries so adding an impressive art installation is crucial for this look. We created our own art by hanging 16 photo frames from a pound store (try www.poundland.co.uk) and used children''s butterfly stickers as the art subject.

The final flourish and a three dimensional edge was added by sticking a couple of mirrored butterflies to the front of each. Modern, original art and we didn''t even have to lift a paintbrush.

Adding genuine moss gave our project a real feel and helped cover the stalks of the flowers. …
