THE Mackay representative sides begin their quest for success in the Queensland District Sides competition today on the Sunshine Coast.

The menCOs side will be playing at Coolum Beach Bowls Club and should meet with some success against the Darling Downs, Condamine and Cunningham in their opening three matches. Their biggest test will come in Round 8 when they face the Gold Coast who has dominated this competition over the past 10 years.

Darren Lampard has withdrawn from the side and been replaced by Seaforth's Mark Glew. The side is: Wade Cranston, Glew, Bruce Bridger, Alan Howard; Bruce Archer, Ian Nash, Steve Blackburn, Peter Blackburn; Tony Gibson, Bob Kinnane, Rob Spence and Tony Connor.

The ladies will play at Club Maroochy and should prove too strong for Leichhardt, Central Queensland and Caboolture in their opening matches as they look to maintain their strong fifth placing of last year.

The ladies selected are: Beverley Benson, Gloria McCarthy, Elaine Buckton, Ester Regan, Dal MacKelvie, Florence Keft, Rhonda Meng, Dianne Faulkner, Lorna Coad, Dorothy Pratt, Ivy Henshaw and Jenny Dyce.

Revised draw

THE recently postponed Plane Creek Mill Shield will be played this weekend at Sarina, but two clubs have withdrawn from the original nominations and this has caused a revised draw.

The draw for the Shield is: 9am Saturday Co Seaforth v North Mackay, Souths Suburban v Pioneer Valley and Sarina v Northern Beaches. The semi-finals at 1pm will be the morning winners plus Marian. The final begins at 9am Sunday.

Also this weekend, members of the Mackay District Branch Past Presidents Association will be travelling to Townsville to play in the 18th State Friendship Carnival from May 12 to 17.

Bowlers from several clubs throughout the district will make up the seven teams competing. …
