MAJOR road works in or close to the Gympie region, combined with the presence of millions of tonnes of accessible, high-quality rock just north of Gympie have attracted two major new quarry operations to the region.

Development applications for the new quarries at Gunalda and Curra are yet to go before the Gympie Regional Council, but one community information day has been held at Curra and another is planned at Gunalda this weekend.

The two quarries could create more than 50 new local jobs.

Wagnersa spokesman John Hunt said yesterday his companyas proposed quarry at Hermans Rd, Gunalda, would generate 25-30 jobs and contained enough high-quality rock to last more than a century.

The site was also fully secluded, surrounded by hills and had direct access to the Bruce Hwy, he said.

aThe market for the materials extracted from the quarry will be in the Gympie region and surrounding regions,a Mr Hunt said. …
