LETTER writer V E Wood is to be congratulated for their understanding of the Yorkshire/ Cleveland/North Riding question 'What's in a name?' (2.5.13) - knowledge that surpasses that of the vast majority of both local politicians and their officials.

I could not agree more that 'Redcar & Cleveland' is a nonsense, because Redcar is part of Cleveland, and Cleveland encompasses a much wider area of the North Riding. I agree that a new county of North East Yorkshire, would be a solution.

Allan J Eyre 'My county hopes', (2.5.13) longs for the day "the Yorkshire boundary will be moved back north to the River Tees and Middlesbrough will once again be in the North Riding of Yorkshire."

I can inform Allan that the Yorkshire historic county border still follows the Tees and that the North Riding (wherein lies Middlesbrough) has never been abolished. But it is essential that this legal and historic fact is fully recognised by local and national government. …
