DRAG RACING: Driver Scott Porter was excited at his first competition drive of the Porters Shelby Mustang at last weekendCOs Nitro Champs event in Sydney.

The car surprised the drag-racing world by finishing a close second in the highly competitive Pro Stock category, racing against 25 of the fastest cars in Australia.

The car, which will be on display this weekend at the Mackay Motor Show at the showgrounds, was appearing in its first competition and made it through to the final in which it was narrowly beaten by the factory-backed Dodge Avenger of Lee Bektash from Melbourne.

The new vehicle was custom built at Jerry Haas Race Cars in Missouri. PorterCOs father Paul, who is principal of Porters Racing, said the new 2013 GT500 Shelby featured the latest suspension technology and had been built to suit a new 400-cube JB engine which was sent to Jerry Haas before manufacture of the chassis. …
