PEUGEOT is the latest marque to make the move into the super-mini SUV market which is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the motor industry.

It follows the success of the likes of the Nissan Juke, Skoda Yeti and the recently-launched Renault Captur.

It's stiff opposition, but the French auto maker is confident its all-new 2008 crossover has the quality and ability to give its rivals a run for their money.

Based on the underpinnings of Peugeot's already highly-acclaimed new 208, the 2008 is higher, longer and wider than its hatchback sibling. The newcomer is designed to suit those who use their motors as everyday transport around town but will also be capable of getting out and about into the countryside or off to the coast.

It's got the appearance of a small 4x4, and although it is frontwheel-driv, the 2008 has been fitted with a system called Grip Control available on some 2008 models.

At the turn of a dial on the centre console, drivers can choose five settings which vary the power and torque to the front wheels to give the best grip depending on road conditions - which would have been a bonus during some pretty dire winter weather in recent months.

To look at the 2008 is pretty impressive with its high stance, sturdy roof rails, swept-back headlights and a sporty chrome grille up front.

The rear features claw-shaped LED lights and to add to its off-road appearance, it has visible underbody protection panels and wind deflector above the bold rear hatch which opens to reveal plenty of space - 360 litres to a whopping 1,194 litres - and it has a low and flat storage bay.

The interior of the new Peugeot is a much more upmarket affair with good-quality soft-touch plastics and seats which are firm but supportive.

I particularly liked the small steering wheel which has been carried over from the 208. All of the switches and dials fall easily to hand and there's plenty of small storage space. …
