PAUL and Margaret Dougherty are carrying on a Grafton racing tradition which has lasted more than 100 years for their family.

So it is only fitting the owners of Dougherty Constructions won the naming rights to the 100th Grafton Cup in the Clarence River Jockey Clubas Kensei Club draw on Saturday night.

aMy great great-grandfather was a bookmaker here at Grafton over 100 years ago,a Paul Dougherty said.

aBoth my father and brother have been bookies here too over the years so it has been a long family tradition.a

The Kensei Club was set up seven years ago and named after the 1987 Grafton Cup winner Kensei, who went on to win the Melbourne Cup the same year.

It allows local business owners to have the chance to sponsor Graftonas biggest race, with all parties paying an entry fee before being drawn out to see who gets naming rights to the Cup.

aWithout great local sponsors like those in the room tonight, we simply wouldnat survive,a CRJC chairman Graeme Green said at the function. …
