Durham Turn Up Heat on Rivals; County Cricket

Article excerpt

DURHAM moved into a good position to force a County Championship Division One victory against Surrey after a rain-shortened third day at the Kia Oval.

At 164 for six, Surrey lead by just 115 with only four second-innings wickets in hand.

Leg spinner Scott Borthwick did most of the damage with three for 41 after Callum Thorp and Mark Wood had both taken wickets with the new ball, although Durham captain Paul Collingwood also chipped in with the vital scalp of Vikram Solanki after Surrey had conceded a deficit of 49 on first innings.

Day three began with Durham adding just seven more runs to their overnight 279 for nine, with last man Ryan Buckley lbw to Gareth Batty for six in a total of 286 which owed much to Dale Benkenstein's 74 not out. Batty's success gave him final figures of five for 80. Surrey were bowled out for 237 first time around with the 19-year-old off spinner Buckley taking five for 86.

| JOE Root's England Lions put New Zealand on the back foot in their final tour match before the first Test at Lord's.

The Kiwis, who may discover today whether frontline seamer Tim Southee will be fit to face England this week after hurting his foot while bowling against the Lions, were on the wrong end of a soggy stalemate at Grace Road.

Root took his season's aggregate to 646 runs in just four innings with a six-and-a-quarter-hour 179 out of the Lions' 444 for seven, in reply to 285 all out.

Lions match manager, and England limited-overs coach, Ashley Giles lamented the arrival of forecast rain which yesterday stopped his team putting the tourists under more pressure.
