She Showed No Sign of the Pain on Trip to Congo

JUST before Easter, I accompanied Foreign Secretary William Hague and Angelina Jolie on a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo, to highlight sexual violence in war zones.

There had been uncertainty over whether Jolie was going to make it, which I put down to the general unreliability of actresses. In fact, she had just had major surgery and was still undergoing treatment. Yet she flew from America to London, then on to Nairobi, and joined us on an RAF flight to Rwanda and DR Congo.

I remember noting how sleek and fresh she looked throughout, and how she demanded no special treatment. She carried her own bag. She endured a Russian helicopter which could not land in the bad weather. On our flight across the Congo, the pilot told us we were trying to outmanoeuvre the worst storm in the world. Jolie did not bat an eyelid. She travelled for hours in 4x4 vehicles on primitive roads.
