Is Power Grid Heading for a Disaster? Views of the North

THE articles regarding the emergence of a 'smart' national grid and the need for quick-charging facilities for electric cars make very interesting reading.

Whereas I applaud the introduction of non-polluting vehicles, the question arises as to how we will be able to power them adequately in addition to serving the country, given the state of the national electricity supply. So many of our aging power stations are nearing the end of their useful lives, and, due to long-term procrastination on the part of the planning authorities, it is likely we will find ourselves in a serious power deficit. We need more power stations, but no sooner does a consortium agree to build a nuclear station, than we hear it claims it has not sufficient money.

Apparently car owners will be urged to charge their cars during the 'slack' period. How will this be enforced? What will happen in the case of a 'smart' domestic freezer switching off and ruining a large quantity of meat? …
