SAILOR LOSES PART OF LEG IN HORROR ON TEES; Probe into Freak Accident on Board Vessel

A PROBE is under way after a sailor lost half his leg in a horrific freak accident on a ship on the River Tees.

The Filipino, in his late 30s, was involved in a routine berthing operation when his foot became entangled in a heavy-duty rope.

He was then dragged across the deck and suffered the horrendous injury as his leg forcefully hit the side of the vessel. The seaman was taken by ambulance to Stockton's University Hospital of North Tees where he was put in a drug-induced coma while the lower half of one of his legs was amputated.

The Marine Accident Investigation Unit today confirmed it was making inquiries into the incident which happened at about 6pm on Saturday, May 11.

The injured man was working on the Kamira Gas chemical vessel when it arrived at Teesport from Heroya in Norway.

He is continuing his recovery in hospital. It is understood that his employers at Belgium-based shipping group Exmar are making arrangements for his father to travel to Teesside to be with him. …
