Peace Pilgrimage to Pass through North East

A 750-mile peace pilgrimage will pass through the North East next month, calling for a reduction in Britain's Trident programme.

The 2013 UK Pilgrimage for Peace and Economic Justice set off from the Scottish island of Iona on Sunday and aims to end with an event in London on July 20.

Between June 10 and 18 it will pass through Northumberland en route to Newcastle then south through Durham.

The pilgrimage, which supporters will join for short stages throughout its route, is being co-ordinated by Andrew Greaves of Ingoe, Northumberland, and jointly commissioned with blessings by the Rev Joanna Anderson, formerly of Hexham Abbey and now Islands Centres Director on Iona.

Ms Anderson said: "My influence probably stemmed from a service that I put together at Hexham Abbey in January 2012, just before I came to Iona. "The significance of it was that we brought together people ecumenically from different churches and different faiths. …
