Man Spat in the Face of a Nurse; Doctor Forced to Sedate Violent Patient on Mercy Flight

SPITTING in the face of the nurse who was trying to help him on a Royal Flying Doctor Service mercy flight has landed Goondiwindi man Danny Edward Cooke in jail.

Cooke had fallen through a glass window at Goondiwindi on March 24 and his injuries were such that it was decided to airlift him to Toowoomba Hospital by RFDS helicopter.

However, after he was strapped into a bed on the helicopter by the doctor and nurse on duty, the 40-year-old had complained about the straps being too tight.

Cooke then started throwing punches and banged against the helicopter wall, causing concern for those on board, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

He had then spat three times, the final spit striking the nurse on the cheek, prosecutor Senior Constable Bill McKenzie said.

His behaviour proved so worrying that the doctor had to sedate him, the court heard.

Toowoomba detectives were on hand when the helicopter landed at Toowoomba Hospital and Cooke was eventually charged with serious assault of a public officer. …
