Workers Fear for Pool Jobs

STAFF at the Memorial and Pioneer swim centres are concerned their jobs may be at risk after a move to lease the poolsCO management to a private company.

Mackay Regional Council said the decision would save more than $400,000 a year.

But others have questioned whether the same standard of service will be provided, with about 30 casual jobs up in the air.

When the Daily Mercury went to the Memorial Pool yesterday to photograph maintenance staff Co an appointment organised with the council Co staff turned the photographer away, saying they did not wish to be in a photo.

Community services director Gerard Carlyon said the council employed three full-time, four temporary contract and about 30 casual staff at the pools. He said the new contractor, LTS Leisure Pty Ltd, was being encouraged to recruit existing staff where possible.

While full-time jobs were guaranteed an offer of employment, either at the pool or somewhere else within council, Mr Carlyon said casual jobs were never guaranteed. …
