This is Baz Luhrmannas take on F. Scott Fitzgeraldas classic American novel, The Great Gatsby. A glorious 3-D production complete with an epic and star-studded soundtrack.

The early reviews havenat been all together favourable and while Baz Luhrmann is a seasoned director it is a surprise to learn he has taken some of the criticism to heart.

aI was really worried for this film,a he said ahead of the Australian premiere. aItas like having a child go out to school and a critic bangs it over the head with a lump of wood. It might not even get to school.

aI wouldnat like to think there was some audiences out there that didnat go on a Saturday night because an old white guy didnat enjoy it.

A tale of the power of money, of love and adoration and obsession with the American dream it is another tragic love story for Luhrmann.

Does he feel a connection to stories with a dark core or is it purely a coincidence?

aItas a good question because I donat intellectually think about that but I find myself drawn to them. Iave always wanted to make a war film. I would like to do an action. I always think Iam going to do these different things and then I find myself drawn to them (the tragic love stories),a he said.

Leonardo DiCaprio was his first choice to play the mysterious and enigmatic Gatsby, a choice that could not be more perfect according to co-star Joel Edgerton, who plays the brutish Tom Buchanan. …
